39 learning mentors received their certificates at Court Stairs Manor on 1st December 2008
Thirty nine learning mentors from primary and secondary schools across Thanet attended a ceremony at Court Stairs Manor to celebrate the successful completion of the CWDC Learning Mentor Training and receive their certificates. CWDC (the Children's Workforce Development Council) is the professional body supporting those who work with children and young people in such areas as mentoring, educational welfare, social care and childcare.
Eleven of the learning mentors had gone on to take the Certificate in Supporting Children and Young People (CSCYP) awarded by Canterbury Christ Church University. All eleven were successful with eight passes, three merits and two distinctions. Linda Leith, course director of the CSCYP, congratulated the group on being the first to achieve this new award which carries 20 points that can be used towards a degree.
Carole Bailey, headteacher of King Ethelbert School and Chair of the Thanet Excellence Cluster, presented the certificates and commended the learning mentors on their dedication and success in supporting the learning, social and emotional development of children and young people. She has seen the positive impact of this work in her own school and the difference it has made to the academic and personal progress of pupils.
Jenny Moorhouse delivers both the CWDC and CCCU training. Adding her congratulations to the mentors, she said that since the learning mentor role was introduced in Thanet, a total of 134 learning mentors have successfully undergone training.
